The CDDB Story

Before CDDB, when you played a CD on your personal computer, there was no way for your CD player to tell you the name of the artist, the album or the song being played without typing in that information yourself. Since listening to audio CDs is the most popular use of a CD-ROM drive, there was clearly a need for a system that would automatically recognize and display that information. Thus, CDDB was created in 1993 as the world's first CD database on the Internet.

Like many successful Internet companies, CDDB started as a hobby with founders, Ti Kan, Graham Toal and Steve Scherf filling this basic consumer need. Little did they know that what they had achitected would become an Internet standard, where the CDDB's titles grow at a rate of over 500 new CDs a day. With a burgeoning developer base, third party CD players began integrating CDDB's unique functionality, and a unique network emerged. To accomplish the considerable technical feat of being able to recognize the CD playing in the drive, even differentiating between various releases (for example, there nearly 100 different releases of Pink Floyd's "The Wall"), CDDB conceived its own proprietary Disc Recognition Service (DRS) in 1995. Early the following year, CDDB put up their web site that allowed visitors to search the rapidly growing database for information on hard-to-find as well as popular CDs.

In August 1998, when it became evident that CDDB needed solid financial backing, the founders sold their young company to Indiana based Escient, Inc., a leading force in developing products that seamlessly merge Internet power with home entertainment devices.

Today, CDDB's DRS technology is not only the market leader but is considered the highest quality system available. CDDB is now a totally secure and reliable service which is provided to users worldwide via a network of high availability, mirrored servers that each have multiple, high bandwidth connections to the Internet. This commitment to creating a high quality infrastructure matches the enthusiasm of the tens of thousands of users worldwide who daily flock to the CDDB Internet sites to access the database and download CDDB-enabled player applications. CDDB's DRS is currently integrated within the overwhelming majority of music software player clients including market share leaders RealJukebox, WinAmp, MusicMatch Jukebox and Audio Catalyst. These software clients and many more offer DRS through licensing agreements with CDDB. They talk out to CDDB over 300,000 times a day.

CDDB hosts the largest selection of downloadable third party software CD players, offering end-users a wide assortment of features and styles from which to choose. Additionally, CDDB provides the most accurate, comprehensive CD search service on the Web, boasting a database of nearly 400,000 album titles and over 4.5 million tracks. By monitoring the CDDB server activity, CDDB also provides the public and media with a listing of the most popular albums played in computers during the previous 30 days. Updated daily, The CDDB Top 10 is the only worldwide digital music chart.

CDDB is now, by far, the most complete CD database in the world.
